Common Desk East End occupies within Ancorian's The Block, a revitalized warehouse in Houston's East End. This vibrant co-working space seamlessly blends industrial charm with modern amenities, featuring private offices, team suites, open desks, conference facilities, an inviting outdoor patio, a cozy indoor sunroom, and an in-house coffee bar. Method Architecture collaborated with the project team, which included Course Construction Group, Dally & Associates, KCI Technologies and Common Desk. Drawing inspiration from Houston's eclectic architectural landscape, particularly in the East End, the design concept embraces the area's diverse building styles. Throughout the space, you'll find a playful mix of office and conference room designs, each reminiscent of local eateries and serving as distinctive wayfinding elements. Unexpected bursts of color, textures, and patterns add personality, from a mosaic-tiled hospitality bar to vibrantly painted structural beams and eye-catching wallcoverings on the restroom ceilings. Complementing the modern furniture are carefully curated vintage pieces, lending an air of authenticity to the environment. To foster organic division within the communal areas, Method Architecture integrated a shelving and slat system, creating cozy lounge pockets between the hospitality bar and break room. Cost-effective color-blocking techniques were employed to delineate spaces while preserving the spacious, warehouse ambiance, utilizing contrasting portions of the concrete floors and walls. Innovative solutions were devised to maximize natural light penetration into the deep floor plan. A former loading dock was transformed into an inviting exterior patio adjacent to the break room, ideal for hosting large events. Skylights strategically placed along the main office corridor flood the space with daylight. At the terminus of the two primary corridors lies a captivating "terrarium" oasis, encircled by wood-framed fluted polycarbonate partitions, evoking a serene outdoor garden ambiance. Steven Brooke Architectural Photography Steven Brooke is an internationally recognized photographer of architecture, landscape, and design. Winner of the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome and the National Honor Award in Photography from the American Institute of Architects, he is the photographer of over 40 books on architecture and design and is on the faculty of the University of Miami School of Architecture. Click the image above to find out more about Steven's book. Steven Brooke began his architectural photography career in 1979. Steven received his first camera at the age of four. His childhood mentor, Dr. Frederick Cleveland Test II, introduced him to the work of the Dutch and Italian painters and engravers of the 17 th and 18 th centuries, particularly those whose work featured perspective studies. It was natural that Steven was drawn to this particular field of photography. His first clients included Dennis Jenkins, Suzanne Martinson, Florence Knoll, Mark Hampton, Ben Baldwin, and Carl Abbott. In 1987, he was awarded the American Institute of Architects National Honor Award in Photography. Steven published his first article with Architectural Digest in 1986 and was a Contributing Photographer for over twenty years. Steven Brooke was involved in the early struggles to save the Miami Beach Art Deco District and have it included in the National Registry of Historic Districts. Many cite the 1982 story in Progressive Architecture that featured his cover and editorial photography, and was championed by then-architecture editor David Morton, as the first major publication to bring the district to national attention and respect. His book, Deco Delights , with pioneer preservationist Barbara Capitman, is still considered the seminal book on the history of the Miami Beach Art Deco district. In Miami, Steven Brooke met Robert Davis who was to develop Seaside, Florida, the landmark town that ushered in the New Urbanism movement in town planning. Steven has been Seaside’s photographer of record since its inception, producing three books on the town and contributing photographs to dozens of articles and books. In 1991, Steven Brooke was awarded the Rome Prize by the American Academy in Rome. While at the Academy, he produced a new v edute de Roma (views of Rome) in the style of the 17 th – and 18 th -century Dutch and Italian engravers. Published by Rizzoli, the resulting book was the first volume of its kind in nearly a century, and the first of his now 17 books for Rizzoli. It included essays by renowned scholars John Varriano, Bonna Wescoat, and Malcomb Campbell. Views of Rome received wide critical acclaim and won the AIA International Book Award. While in Rome, Steven photographed the Cappella Paolina, the Pope’s Private chapel, the first photographer in many decades to have been granted such permission. He also contributed to Sarah McPhee’s innovative book on Bernini and the St. Peter’s Bell Towers. Views of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, which Steven Brooke both wrote and photographed, was produced in 1997 when he was a Fellow at the Albright Institute in Jerusalem. Like Views of Rome , it was the first book of its kind in decades. To date, he has been the photographer of 40 books on architecture and design, nine of which he has also written. His publishers include Rizzoli International, Abbeville, Abrams, University of Pennsylvania Press, Pelican, and Clarkson Potter. The project began with a complete demolition down to the building’s core structure, including the removal of all existing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, followed by a comprehensive full-floor build-out. The design features a striking blend of exposed and finished architectural elements. Exposed ceilings frame the perimeter of the suite, while full sheetrock ceilings define the central areas, creating visual contrast and spatial organization throughout the space. Additional highlights include polished concrete flooring, DIRTT demountable glass fronts and partition walls, and a newly constructed restroom core that enhances both functionality and tenant appeal. One of the project’s most significant challenges was integrating an entirely new MEP infrastructure while preserving the clean, open aesthetic of the exposed ceiling areas. Through careful coordination and strategic planning, the project team successfully concealed the majority of the building systems within the interior sheetrock ceiling zones, maintaining the design intent and creating a refined industrial environment. Completed in collaboration with AMB Architects and Infinity MEP+S Engineering, the finished spec suite delivers a modern, move-in-ready workplace that combines sophisticated design with efficient building performance. (Brown & Gay Engineers, Inc.) headquarters on Level 5 North at One Westchase Center, located at 10777 Westheimer Road in Houston. The 23,983-square-foot project was delivered on an accelerated 10-week schedule, showcasing efficiency without compromising quality. The scope of work included a welcoming reception and conference suite, complete with a mail room and coffee bar, as well as fully renovated and expanded restrooms featuring new tile finishes, wallcoverings, partitions, and modern vanities. A large break room with banquette seating was added, along with reconfigured office layouts highlighted by full-height glass fronts and premium finishes throughout. Offices were thoughtfully placed along the building’s curved perimeter to maximize daylight and panoramic views, creating a bright, engaging work environment. Additional copy, print, and work rooms were integrated to support daily operations and improve overall workplace functionality. The project was completed through close collaboration with English & Associates Architects and EBE Consulting Engineers.
