  • Companies Are Finally Designing Offices for the New Work Reality

An article in TIME Magazine by Alana Seumuels explores why "Companies Are Finally Designing Offices for the New Work Reality ". Architecture and design firm NBBJ is leading the way in redesigning offices for the new work reality. While many companies were downsizing their office spaces during the pandemic, NBBJ took over a former clothing company's offices in New York City to create a 28,000 square foot "living lab." The aim was to test and discover the best design and layout for hybrid work, creating a space where employees would want to come despite long commutes. NBBJ plans to use the insights gained from their own office redesign to help clients design offices for the hybrid future. The new office spaces being designed are focused on creating environments that promote collaboration, socialization, and inspiration. They are moving away from the traditional office setup, with conference rooms resembling cozy living rooms, green carpets creating a natural atmosphere, and rotating art projects on display. These hybrid workplaces are becoming more prevalent, with more companies adopting flexible work policies. Some companies are even rethinking the concept of a permanent office, opting for remote work and occasional in-person meetups. Startups like Zapier and Gitlab organize company retreats and offsite meetups to foster social connections among employees. The new offices need to be adaptable to changing circumstances and employee needs. They incorporate movable walls and furniture, allowing for easy reconfiguration. The focus is on creating spaces that are welcoming and enjoyable to work in, rather than just a place for individual desk work. While the challenge of long commutes still exists, these redesigned offices aim to provide an environment that makes employees want to come in, fostering collaboration and innovation. Collaborating with a proficient project team, Method Architecture partnered with Stewart Development & Construction, Melton Electric, ALJ Lindsey, Henderson Rogers, Infinity MEP, and AWR Designs to realize the client's vision. The comprehensive project encompassed the design of various spaces, including a reception area, five examination rooms, two surgery rooms, an x-ray room, consultation room, laboratory and sterile area, as well as a breakroom and private office. The exterior design showcases a blend of dark brick stacked-style work, horizontal wood, and stone, aligning with the client's desire for a "mid-century" style marked by clean lines. This aesthetic seamlessly transitions into the interior, where floor-to-ceiling wood slat panels greet visitors in the lobby, mirroring the exterior woodwork. Utilizing sliding modern barn doors with matching wood on the exam rooms not only saves space but also maintains the stylish design. Dark teal accents in the hallways add depth and contrast to the otherwise crisp white palette. Throughout the project, Method Architecture maintained close communication with the client, offering several schematic design options accompanied by renderings to ensure alignment with the desired aesthetic and functionality. The traditional setup of large desktop computers, cushioned mouse pads, and towering piles of architectural drawings is gradually being replaced. In their stead, architects are increasingly using digital pencils and tablets. Modern architecture offices are experiencing a shift from traditional tools like bulky desktops and paper drawings to digital technologies like tablets and digital pencils. This transition marks a move towards a "paperless" studio concept, reminiscent of Bernard Tschumi's vision during his tenure at Columbia University in the 1990s. However, unlike the original concept, this new wave of paperless architecture begins with digital pencils rather than computer clicks, blending traditional hand-drawing methods with advanced digital tools. Touchscreen technologies, exemplified by Sean Gallagher's work at Diller Scofidio + Renfro, are at the forefront of this change. Gallagher uses tools like the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, integrating them into all design phases, from conceptual sketches to construction document markups. This digital approach offers greater precision and flexibility than traditional methods. Companies like Adobe, Autodesk, and Morpholio offer apps specifically for architects, marrying the tactile familiarity of paper sketching with the computational advantages of digital platforms. This evolution in architectural tools and processes signifies a new era in design, aligning with Tschumi's original vision but enhanced by today's technological advancements.
